Spring 2013 Artist Series
Introduction to Visual Journaling with Terry Garrett
Saturday, March 16th, 2013 (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)
Class Fee:$50/Members – $65 non-members
Materials Fee Paid to Instructor: $10
Alternately called art journaling, visual journaling is an expanded version of keeping a journal. Sometimes words can seem inadequate to fully convey your feelings or thoughts. Pairing words with imagery can help to produce a more satisfying form of self-expression.
In this daylong workshop, you will make your own “hard cover” journals in the morning. The afternoon session will provide the opportunity to explore several mixed-media techniques to use in the journals you construct.
This introductory workshop is open to all skill levels, including those who have no previous experience working with a journal. If you’d care to explore examples of what visual journaling looks like, please try a “Google search” using the search phrase, “visual journaling”. I believe you’ll be impressed at what you’ll discover.
Please bring a bag lunch and a preferred beverage for yourself, if you’d care to have something other than coffee, tea or water, which I’ll provide. A refrigerator is available in the studio space for any food needing to be kept chilled. Also, please bring a “paint shirt” or shop apron to protect your clothing, as we will be using paints during the afternoon session. The materials fee charged covers all the costs of materials you’ll use in making your hardcover journal and contents. The pages for the journal will be high quality “artist paper” suitable for mixed media work. I will make available many varied art supplies with which you can experiment in embellishing your journal pages.

Inkle looms are small, portable looms which can be used to make belts, bookmarks, straps, decorative edging, and even jewelry. They are designed for a warp-faced style of weaving (come and find out what that means), so we will learn how to put the warp yarns on the loom to create the patterns you choose. There will be varied yarns available so you can choose your colors as well. We’ll practice weaving technique and work on some small projects so you’ll have something to take home. By the end of the class, you should have an “inkling” of the many possible creative projects that can be woven on such a simple loom.
