Karen uses seeds, shells, found objects, old jewelry reassembled, sequins, leather, and handmade beads that are carved, painted, dyed, and often crocheted or knitted together to make truly unique and wearable pieces. Karen says “’Reduce, reuse, recycle’ are terms we’ve all become familiar with lately. I’d like to add the words ‘re-see’ and ‘rethink’. As a musician, I find it instinctive to ‘rehear’ and rehearse sounds in order to create something that inspires. As a craftsperson, I try to ‘re-see’ objects to create something new, whether it be in technique or mood. When we can see objects, even everyday objects, in new ways, we can begin to rethink our world, and reinvent how we use things to create objects that bring us delight or whimsy.” Karen is a longtime music teacher and singer of opera, oratorio and musical comedy, and takes a special interest in making connections between the arts and general studies in school settings.
