October 2007 Exhibit

The month of Oct the BCAC was host to the 5th Annual “It’s Only Clay” National Juried Ceramics Competion  and Exhibition that opened on Oct 5th.  The exhibit features 40 works from all over the United States that were selected by 2007 Juror, Jeff Oestreich.  Over 170 pieces of functional clay vessels were submitted from as far away as California, Texas, Florida and Massachusetts as well as many from the Midwest States.

Also featured in the exhibit are several selections of the Margaret H. Harlow Collection from BSU and work by the BSU Ceramics Club can be seen in Gallery X2 and X3.  The entire exhibit will be on display now through Oct. 27th with much of the work for sale.

Margaret H. Harlow Collection 

Established in 1973 the Margaret H. Harlow Collection is a part of the Bemidji State University Visual Arts Department  Permanent Collection.  Boasting over 300 pieces that have been donated or purchased by Margaret Harlow, this diverse collection of work is a “who’s who” in contemporary ceramic vessel making with works of some of the most accomplished potters of the world and that of new emerging talent in this diverse and exciting medium.  The Margaret H. Harlow Collection features both national and international artists, and include work by Peter Voulkas, Bill Gossman, Tony Moore and BSU alumnus Jeff Oestreich, our 2007 IOC Juror.  To read Jeff’s curators statement and see the complete list of artists included in the 2007 It’s Only Clay exhibit at the BCAC click here.

5th Annual It’s Only Clay 

Created 5 years ago as a collaboration between the Bemidji Community Art Center and the BSU Visual Arts Department, “It’s Only Clay” features a September lecture and two day workshop held on the campus of BSU as well as the National Juried Ceramics Competion and Exhibition held in October at the BCAC. This years lecture and workshop gave attendees a first hand look at Oestreich’s technique and skill while sharing lifes experiences and what has influenced him as an artist.  Oestreichs own work is also featured in the Talley Gallery on the campus of BSU for the month of October.

Margaret Harlow Purchase Award Winners

Professor Butch Holden of the Bemidji State University Visual Arts Dept has selected four works from the It’s Only Clay Exhibit to be added to the Margaret H. Harlow Ceramic Teaching Collection at BSU. The following artists work will become the latest acquisitions of this ever growing and impressive collection featuring works from around the world.
