The Bemidji Community Art Center is looking for artists, organizations, clubs or guilds interested in participating in an Artisan Guild Village as a part of the 42nd Annual Art in the Park Art Fair and Centennial Celebration featuring a Pageant Performance both days of the Festival by the “In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre.” 

If you are a weaver, spinner, blacksmith, wood worker, glass blower, do leather work, wheel thrown pottery or any other art and craft by hand that lends itself to a Guild Village setting and do demonstrations or allow hands on experiences for children and/or adults the BCAC would like you to consider participating in this two day event on JULY 18-19, 2009.  This event is made possible in part by the Bemidji Area Arts Endowment and the H.B. and Ina T.   • Gallery North Open House - Showcase Artist-  Nature Photographer, Pam Johnson.  Featured Artists are Mary Know Johnson with a reading at 3pm & 4pm and Marion Caroline Reil demonstrating watercolor painting.

Join us in the Centennial Celebration of the Arts!
The Headwaters School of Music and the Arts and the Bemidji Community Art Center are looking for people of all ages to participate in a hands-on residency with the “In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre” (HOBT).  The culmination of this residency will be a 2-day Pageant Presentation at the 42nd Annual Art in the Park festival on July 18th and 19th, 2009.
HOBT is looking for:

 Children and adults with theatrical interests.
 Musicians of all ages.
 Volunteer crewmembers

Help build the puppets for the pageant presentation!  Beginning July 8th we will the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts into a giant studio where staff artists of HOBT and volunteers (you) will create the pageantry!!

How it Works: ♦An artist will introduce you to the pageant theme by showing you the giant storyboard (a visual script).  ♦You select a section of the pageant to work on, find the artist in charge of that section, and set to work.  ♦Artists will guide you.  ♦You’ll need 3 or 4 sessions to complete a project, but you can come to as many or as few as your schedule allows.

To All Interested Participants:
• Workshops are Free
• Donations graciously accepted, always welcome, and much needed.
• Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
• Wear “painting” clothes.
• Bring recycled items (if you can): small plastic tubs with lids, brown paper bags, newspapers, fabric, sheets, latex paint, bamboo, scissors.
• No reservations required. Just come to the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts!  (Check the Headwaters School or BCAC website or phone for dates and hours.)

First Friday Art Walk in Bemidji for May 1st, 2009

  • Bemidji Community Art Center -  Opening reception May 1st from 4 to 6pm for Annual 5th Grade Invitational.  This exhibit features work by ISD 31 5th Graders and our special guest schools, Red Lake Elementary and the Schoolcraft Learning Community.   Exhibit runs May1st through the 16th. 
  • Neilson Place – The North Country Health Services Art Committee is pleased to host Natalia Himmirska’s exhibit, titled, “Embrace” now through June for the pleasure of residents, families, staff and the community at large.
  • Wild Hare Bistro and Coffee House  – will feature Don Houseman’s exhibit entitled “First”, from May 1st through 29th.  The show will feature Houseman’s original pen & ink illustrations from his first children’s book, “How Harvey and His Friends Saved the Barn”, which he has written, illustrated and self published.  Book signing and reception May 1st from 3:00 to 6:00pm.   Also featuring First Friday Wine Bar, from 5:00 to 9:00PM.
  • Dunn Bros Coffee continues to exhibit work by photographer Brandon Bjerknes for the month of May with his show entitled “Simply Beautiful”. 
  • Bad Cat Creations Gallery & Gifts featured artists for May – jewelry artist Crystal Price & fiber artist, Ashleigh Buck.  Ashleigh & Crystal will be at Bad Cat Creations for a meet, greet & demo from 4pm to 7pm. Refreshments will be served. 
  • Beltrami County History Center - The Beltrami County Historical Society, in conjunction with Gallery North, presents “Spring Fling” now through May 2009.  Free Admission into the Museum every First Friday from 10 to 4pm. 
  • Cabin Coffeehouse and Café  -invites you to their First Friday Art Walk Reception on May 1st featuring “Then and Now”, a 40 year retrospective of work by painter and mixed media artist, Marion Caroline.   Stop by between 4 and 6pm for refreshments and to meet the artist.
  • Bemidji Public Library Art Wall is pleased to announce that their featured artist for May is painter, Ivy Bailie.   Ivy’s work will be on display now through May. 
  • Mask & Rose Women’s Theater Collective and the Northwood’s Folk Collective - First Friday Coffeehouse on May 1st at the Wild Rose Theater. starting at 7:30 PM, performer sign-up begins at 6:30 PM, cost is $2.00 single – $5.00 family.  NEW EXHIBIT for May in the Fleur de Lis Gallery! “It’s Greek to Me” photos from the Greek Isles by Cate Belleveau and paintings by Alice Linda.  Join us at 6:30 for the opening reception at 6:30.

  • Mask & Rose Women’s Theater Collective and the Northwood’s Folk Collective announces their First Friday Coffeehouse  starting at 7:30 PM.   NEW EXHIBIT for April in the Fleur de Lis Gallery! “Mother Art” – A celebration of woman in the arts featuring a collection of artwork made by woman of all ages from Bemidji and the surrounding area. 
  • Gallery North Open House Friday April 3rd from 2-5pm.   April Showcase will be the Annual Artists of Minnesota Traveling Mini Show. Featured Artists for April are two of the founding members of Gallery North: Joyce Martin, a Watercolorist, and Mary Morton who is a Rosemaler.

Work in the Encaustic and Other media of canvas and panel…….

The Bemidji Community Art Center will host Natalia Himmirska of Bemidji State University and her students for the month March.  The Exhibit “The Palette: Exploring the media of Painting” is a wonderful display of works by Natalia and her students in the encaustic and other media of canvas and panel.    The exhibit runs now through March 28th.

Announcing upcoming workshop scheduled for April 4th, 2009 entitled -
“Visual Expression: Autobiography Through Doll Making”

I Love a Parade Program Director and Lead Artist Sandra Haff, and seven of The Dolls’ artists – Cindy Arnold, Danielle Goins, Lois Erickson, LaTonya McIntosh, Sandy Olson, Michele Stanford, and Karri Zebel along with Renee Jones, daughter of deceased artist Marilyn- will present an experiential workshop inviting participants to express and share their autobiographies employing visual creations, dolls. This workshop is an exciting opportunity for artists, human service practitioners, and interested community members to participate in a hands-on experience that can be then shared in different settings. Materials will be provided, although participants are welcome to share their materials.

When: Saturday, April 4, 2009 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Bemidji State University campus  Next to Diamond Point Park, Birchmont Dr. N.E.
